PIFF aims to expand opportunities for the development of international co-productions involving Bulgarian film professionals, while enriching the cultural life of Plovdiv and Bulgaria through the creation of the city’s first film festival with an international profile. The festival will bring together film professionals and lay the foundations for future international co-productions film distribution and dialogue in Plovdiv.

Plovdiv is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, where ancient history, colourful Revival-era architecture and a vibrant contemporary arts scene come together. Named European Capital of Culture in 2019, the city is known for its beautifully preserved Old Town, Roman theatre, creative Kapana district, lively festivals and warm, welcoming atmosphere. From intimate galleries and independent cultural spaces to open-air events held among the city’s ancient streets, Plovdiv has developed a distinctive creative identity that combines its remarkable heritage with a contemporary outlook.
For an international film festival, this atmosphere offers a particularly fitting setting. It is our initiative to be the gateway to independent cinema in Plovdiv and become part of a wider cultural experience. Audiences can move between screenings, historic sites, galleries, cafés and public spaces, experiencing the city as both a destination and a living cultural environment. The combination of ancient heritage, contemporary creativity and an established festival culture makes Plovdiv an ideal host city for an international celebration of cinema.
Lucky Cinema
Lucky Cinema – House of Cinema is a landmark independent cinema in the heart of Plovdiv and an important part of the city’s contemporary cultural scene. Originally opened in 1997 as Plovdiv’s first private cinema, it later closed in 2009 before being renovated and revitalised by Plovdiv Municipality and reopening in 2014 as Lucky – House of Cinema. Since then, it has established itself as a home for Bulgarian, European and international independent and arthouse cinema, regularly hosting film festivals, special screenings, premieres, discussions and cultural events. With its central location and strong connection to Plovdiv’s film community, Lucky Cinema provides an ideal setting for the Plovdiv International Film Festival, bringing international cinema and audiences together in the cultural heart of the city.
